Mount Avalon Trail

Avalon_hike_start
Getting ready to start Mt. Avalon hike, from Crawford Station.
This was to be our first warm-up hike, but it was a lot steeper than we had planned!

Waterfall_EH
There are a series of waterfalls along the early part of the trail

Split_Falls-A
You could hike right by this cascade if you didn't look back down the creek gorge.
I thought it was the most interesting of the falls in this section of creek, yet it wasn't named.

Avalon_summit-BA
After a steep climb, we reached Mt. Avalon's summit.
Another group had arrived just before us.

I had to get in on a summit shot!

Some colorful wet leaves

Down_Crawford_Notch
The overcast conditions at the summit gave a hazy view down Crawford Notch

Hazy view to the west

Avalon_view_B
It remained overcast while we were at the summit.
(of course it cleared some later as we descended...)

On the trail just below Avalon's summit

Descending_Avalon
Photos don't give an indication of how STEEP the approach & descent of Avalon is.
(I don't think the early NH trail builders ever heard of switchbacks...)

Avalon_descentAvalon_descent
A few more attempts to show steepness of Avalon trail, on descent
(and these were all taken below the REAL steep part!)

Pause at creek crossing

K_on_trailA_in_creek

Creek-H
Who needs a trail with this nice creek?

Y_Falls
Nice un-named waterfall off Avalon Trail   -   I called it "Y Falls"...

Y_Falls
Wider angle shot of Y Falls, showing the gorge cut through the rock below the falls.
